We're Doing This Philosophy Thing Together, Join Us | 00

Follow along as I create a Philosophy course using all freely available online materials, then take it with me. Or create your own course alongside and join us from your own parallel universe.

I was really inspired by ’s post for autodidacts, “How to Create Your Own University Course to Teach Yourself Almost Anything,”** **where Settecase shows readers how to create a course on any topic, then follow through with taking it, and finish it off successfully with a written piece. I want to try this!, and I’m hoping that you will want to come along for the ride. Maybe you will be inspired to design a course for yourself as well, and at the end, maybe we can hold an unconference about our experiences, and those of us who want to can present our written work to each other. How does this sound?

What I truly appreciated about Settecase’s post is how it provides a well-structured approach as support for our ambitions. By giving your self-study the structure of a university course, as they suggest, you can enhance your motivation and learn more than you might at first imagine possible.

I have created and ran many a university philosophy course, and I can tell you that professors spend a lot of time designing the course syllabus, as it can make or break the course! So much so that I used to dream about showing up to the first day of class without the syllabus done, and it was akin to those dreams where you are nakid in public, hahaha.

Anyhow, go read Settecase’s post, where they suggest this process:

  1. $1
  2. $1
  3. $1
  4. $1
  5. $1
  6. $1
  7. $1

I propose going through these steps together on Tuesdays at 1pm EST. I’ll hop on a Substack live and you can work along with me, or just watch the process unfold. Some steps may take more than one session, and that’s okay. Some steps, like 1 and 2, may be done in one session. Roughly speaking, we’ll take August to plan, and go through the course in October - November. We’ll start next week, August 12th, which is exactly one week from today.

You’ll need to be a paid subscriber to participate, so here is your opportunity to subscribe for a special participant discount (available for monthly or annual plans):

Also, please share this post with at least one philosophy-curious friend! It’s more fun to do philosophy together.
